Each week, the children are given time to write individually over an extended period of time (usually 45 minutes). The focus of this writing links to the Big Talk homework that they have been given the previous week. This is an opportunity for the children to have more time to express their ideas and be able to put into practice the skills that they have been learning through the week.
VCOP is the toolbox for any writer. It consists of:
V - vocabulary, the great adjectives, adverbs and descriptive language
C - connectives, the linking words to add in detail to the children's sentences
O - openers, the way each sentence starts and is organised
P - punctuation, the use of a range of punctuation as the child becomes more skillful
Each area is focused upon in the course of the week to give the children key skills to use when writing. These are then applied in small tasks and activities in each lesson. In each Big Write, the teacher focuses upon those skills taught over the course of the week to ensure that they have been understood and applied.
We have just bought a new reading scheme for the school which we hope to roll out in the very near future. Watch this space!
